No Freddy Krueger is not coming for you! But storm Freddy is now clipping Mauritius and is on course to directly hit Madagascar. Formed in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia, Freddy has been moving slowly westward over the last week.

Mauritius has already battened down the hatches on Monday as an intense tropical cyclone approached, with flights cancelled in the Indian Ocean island nation.

To prepare for cyclones, it is important to stay informed of weather forecasts and warnings, have a plan in place for evacuation or shelter, and make sure you have emergency supplies such as food, water, and medications. It is also important to take steps to protect your property, such as securing loose objects, boarding up windows, and reinforcing doors.

If you are in an area that is affected by a cyclone, it is important to follow instructions from local authorities and evacuate if necessary. Stay safe and take care of yourself and your loved ones.

How a Cyclone is Formed

Cyclones (Indian Ocean), also known as hurricanes (North Atlantic) or typhoons (North Pacific Ocean), are large rotating storm systems that form over warm ocean waters. Cyclones are formed by a combination of several factors:

  • Warm ocean waters: Cyclones require warm ocean waters with a temperature of at least 26.5°C (79.7°F) to form and strengthen. Warm water provides the energy needed to fuel the cyclone.
  • Low pressure: Cyclones form around an area of low pressure. As air rises from the warm ocean surface, it creates an area of low pressure at the centre of the storm.
  • Coriolis force: The Coriolis force, which is caused by the Earth’s rotation, causes the winds around the low-pressure area to rotate. In the northern hemisphere, the winds rotate counterclockwise, while in the southern hemisphere, they rotate clockwise.
  • Moisture: The warm ocean water evaporates and provides moisture to the atmosphere. This moisture is then carried by the winds into the center of the storm, where it condenses to form clouds.

As the cyclone gains strength, the winds can reach speeds of over 119 km/h (74 mph), and the storm can cause significant damage to coastal areas. The intensity and duration of a cyclone depend on various factors, including ocean temperature, atmospheric moisture, and wind shear.
